Event Details
Gates open at 10am. Children 12 and under are free. Bring out your picnic baskets and enjoy the thrill of the “fastest game on four feet” at one of the most beautiful settings in the area. With Clydesdale wagon rides, opening parade, live national anthem, exciting polo action, tailgating, half-time entertainment, divot stomping, food and beverage, and plenty of fresh air, Sunday polo is the perfect setting for a family and friends outing.
Dogs are welcome on a leash. Polo is a community sport like no other. For decades the Sarasota Polo Club has been a popular Sunday tradition and part of the Sarasota social scene. An estimated 45,000 Sarasota-area polo spectators will be on hand during our 2020 Sarasota Polo Season, beginning Sunday December 15th, 2019 through Sunday April 12th, 2020.
Settled in 1922 and established in 1991 as the first development in Lakewood Ranch, the Sarasota Polo Club has a remarkable legacy filled with stories of cowboys, cold Milwaukee beer, and chewing gum. In 1922 the Uihlein family, owners of Schlitz Brewing Company, acquired our property as a 28,000-acre timber ranch. Originally the cowboys who worked on our ranch began playing knock-around polo games in their free time. Our ranch hands rode their quarter horses with stock saddles using make-shift polo equipment and knowing very little about polo, the cowboys played by their own rules. Rule #1? The first rider to fall off their horse bought beer for the entire team, a tradition that remains in place today. Eventually mallets, saddles and a few polo ponies were donated to the “cowboy games,” and a real polo club was born. Today the Sarasota Polo Club, owned by James and Misdee Wrigley Miller, is a premier luxury sporting destination located in Lakewood Ranch FL on 130 perfectly manicured acres, including 45 private equestrian estates, 7 Bermuda grass polo fields, a regulation-size polo arena, a half-mile horse track, on-site stabling for 72 horses, a player’s clubhouse and a polo pavilion. In addition to polo, our Club’s spectacular grounds and venues are home to a variety of community and social events including concerts, festivals, theater, sporting events, charity fundraisers, corporate meetings and elegant weddings.
