Join us for the 6th annual REEF Sarasota Lionfish Derby! The event will be held on Friday, July 12th through Sunday, July 14th at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, FL.
Event Details
There will be a mandatory Captain’s meeting on Friday, July 12th at 6:30 pm at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. IMPORTANT: This year we are allowing for remote attendance of the Captain's Meeting via Go To Meeting (details will be emailed out). To get approval to attend the captains meeting remotely a member of the team must call REEF Headquarters and speak with Alli Candelmo, 305-856-0030.
Fishing will begin at sunrise on Saturday, June 13th and all lionfish must be turned into the scoring station at Mote by 1:00pm on Sunday, July 14th. Scoring and public activities, including lionfish tastings, will be from 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday. Awards will immediately follow scoring at 3:30pm. Cash prizes will be given for the most, biggest, and smallest fish (prize amounts depend on the number of teams that participate).
Lionfish scoring, fillet and dissection demonstrations, Lionfish tastings, games, raffle prizes and other activities will start at 12:00pm on Sunday and are open to public.
MOTE Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is hosting a culinary competition. Five chefs will prepare a delicious lionfish dish to be voted on through a people choice competition. More details and to buy tickets for the culinary can be found here: https://mote.org/events/details/sarasota-lionfish-derby-2018
Teams with an FWC Saltwater Fishing License will have the option to sell their lionfish after the scoring at the derby so if you don't have you license apply for it today online. https://myfwc.com/license/commercial/saltwater/
For anyone that does not have a boat we are working with local dive shops in Sarasota to provide charters for teams. Details for this will be determined at a later date so be sure to keep looking for updates!
$120 per team. 2-4 person teams.
