Interesting History In 1992, The Mermaid Restaurant opened in the Royal Palm Cottage on Gulf Drive. At first sparsely advertised, the vintage Florida cottage became the best known secret on the island. Famous for fresh seafood, steaks and homemade desserts in a cozy and casual atmosphere, this eatery is a must for anyone visiting Anna Maria Island. "If you haven't Eaten at The Mermaid you haven't been to Anna Maria!" - The Springs The Mermaid was owned by long time island resident Ed Spring and his daughters, Kellie and Serena.
