The statistics don't lie. Lakewood Ranch is the second fastest growing master-planned community in the country and the fifth fastest overall. The influx of new people requires a robust medical presence, so with numbers like those, it's no wonder the Florida Cancer Specialists chose the booming corridor of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and State Road 70 to break ground on the $16 million, 44,000 square foot Lakewood Ranch Cancer Center.

"This is world-class medicine hometown care," said Florida Cancer Specialists CEO Brad Prechtl. "We pride ourselves in patients going to one location and receiving the bulk of their services. State of the art equipment and a huge focus on clinical research studies.  Bottom line, patients won't have to travel and we're providing a higher level of care than our competition."

Florida Cancer Specialists will be one of four tenants in the new building, which is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2019 and they'll have nearly triple the space from the current 4600 square feet they're currently using.

"This is a labor of love.  We're here today to make things better for future patients," said Dr. Miguel Pelayo. "This just doesn't happen every day. I had pie in the sky dreams for Lakewood Ranch. I wanted to be part of this for my neighbors, my community."

The new center is being built by The Lunz Group from Lakeland and will include 38 chemotherapy chairs, 10 examination rooms, access to national clinical trials and a fixed, full imaging suite.

"We wanted a contemporary look that fit into Lakewood Ranch," said Lunz Group architect Jim Graham. "When patients come here, many of them are weak and scared. The view of the wetlands we are going to provide gives them a sense of peace and comfort during one of the most difficult times in their lives."
